July Open Studios
I make pictures out of clay – landscapes, seascapes, still lifes and abstract images.
Sometimes I write in the clay, stories and poems, a sentence – on tiles or plates and even on small agate bowls, writing around the rim, where the inside meets the outside.
I use several different clays; white and red earthenware, smooth and grogged, a Spanish pink, a French black, and even a dark grey 'mud' found on the coast at low tide which fires a pale buff.
Then using a ‘varied sandwich’ technique I press some layers together, some thick, some thin, add colours, cut them up, roll them flat, join them up again with a coloured slip and maybe flatten them out again.
They come out of the moment, and yet out of an idea too that got the whole thing rolling.
