Workshop Title: "Spring Flowers and Little Dewdrops"
The main Iceni Botanical Artists (IBA) exhibition title is "Spring into Summer"—Tina's one-day workshop complements this theme by encouraging students to carefully observe, draw, and then paint a wild spring flower, with perhaps a little, elegantly placed, dewdrop.
Working from live spring flowers, by using group demonstrations and one-to-one tuition, the workshop aims to show students the rudiments of botanical drawing, where accuracy is the key and observation is the main skill. Taking time to really look at a plant, to understand its shapes and colours before attempting to draw it, breeds familiarity, which greatly helps in the development and completion of a pleasing, but accurate, botanical artwork.
Preliminary pencil sketches will be assessed for elements which might be included in the final composition. The selected elements will then be traced and transferred to good quality paper ready for the application of water colour.
Although botanical illustration has set rules for applying water colour, this workshop will encourage students to set their own boundaries when using the different techniques of application that will be shown in the group demonstrations. Some aspects of colour mixing will also be included to help students understand and achieve an accurate colour balance in their work.
This workshop is suitable for painters of all abillities. Live plant specimens will be provided.
