July Open Studios
I've always loved drawing and painting, and had hoped to take up a career in art, but 50 years ago art was not viewed as a 'proper job' for a young girl, so after a 33 year career in the electronics industry, I suddenly rediscovered my artistic side, (I was 57). I set about transforming an unused back bedroom into a home studio, and was instantly hooked. In 2012 my husband and I turned the entire house into an art gallery, and hosted my first Cambridge Open Studios. We welcomed over 100 visitors, and the enthusiasm from them was fantastic. As a result I was offered a solo exhibition in the Curiosity Gallery, St Ives, and I also took on a commission for the new JD Wetherspoons in Royston. I quickly outgrew the bedroom studio, so in 2013 I moved into the Old School, Whittlesford and started another new phase in my life; running my own business. It's hard work, but surprisingly it's going from strength to strength, which I'm told is unusual for a new business! I'm also supported by my friend and fellow artist Lesley Rumble, and my long suffering husband Dave, who spends much of his time chopping wood for the log burner. I offer a programme of fully tutored one and two day art workshops with well known professional artists, plus three 'drop-in' days a week. The downside of all this is that I get very little free time to paint, as I'm always busy with admin work, but I enjoy the challenge and paint as often as I can.
