#NoviCambridge: ARTWORKS BY ANDY DAKIN
Throughout May, Novi, espresso bar, cocktail bar and kitchen on Regent Street, will be showing a series of atmospheric, figurative artworks by Cambridge artist Andy Dakin. Drawing inspiration from Novi itself, Dakin has created images that capture a slice of modern Cambridge city life from his own unique perspective. During the exhibition, which covers three floors, he will continue to work at Novi as artist-in-residence as he moves onto his next projects.
“Rather than an exhibition of disparate works, I immediately saw this as an opportunity to create a series of new pictures along the same theme. When I looked at how dramatically Novi had changed from its days as The Fountain, it fell into place to me; I had to paint what I saw here. The ground floor bar has an amazing open frontage which offers the light versus shade thing I like so much. Then there are reflective surfaces, unusual electric lighting, the people coming in and out, coffees and cocktails being made, bearded baristas, customers on their phones and laptops, and also that touch of retro here and there that is very much part of modern bars and cafes.”
Dakin has also used Novi as a base for some new portraits, in order to keep up with commissions that have been building since he returned to art in 2013. In that time he has won the ‘Visitors Favourite’ three times at the Cambridge Drawing Society biennial exhibitions, and recently had works chosen for the forthcoming ‘The Cambridge Art Book’.
